What is Device Sync?
Device Sync is a feature that connects MongoDB’s application platform with mobile or edge devices. It allows for automatic and bidirectional synchronization of data between the device databases and a MongoDB Atlas cluster in the cloud.
Real-world application: Retail stores use Device Sync to power mobile inventory apps that keep stock updates synchronized across devices and the cloud, even offline. Employees manage inventory effortlessly, while store-specific data and central reporting ensure scalable and reliable operations.
Why the revamp?
Since its launch in 2019, Device Sync has grown significantly, incorporating numerous features and updates. However, recent analytics reveal that nearly 30% of new users abandon the process before completing the onboarding funnel. Additionally, user research and feedback highlight observability as the major pain point for existing users, impacting their overall experience. As a result, the revamp was initiated to enhance the onboarding experience for new users and streamline daily management usability for existing users.
Onboarding
Before the revamp, users had multiple options to get started with Device Sync, added incrementally over the years. This resulted in a fragmented and often cumbersome experience. For example, setting up Sync required navigating several tabs and switching between a web browser and the user’s local environment.

To address this, we adopted a "less is more" approach - streamlining onboarding to two clear, distraction-free options:
Quickstart: Tailored for users new to MongoDB or unfamiliar with the technology, this path guides them step-by-step to set up their first Device Sync app using a sample app.
Advanced: Geared toward experienced users, this option enables Sync with a single click, followed by access to customizable settings for greater flexibility.

Observability

The Device Sync landing page was completely redesigned to provide users with improved observability into the status of their app. Key features, such as error monitoring, logs, and client connection tracking, make it easier for users to identify issues and optimize their app development process.

Success metrics
The Device Sync revamp launched in March 2024, leading to significant improvements in user conversion rates. Between April and July 2024, the Intent → Deploy CVR reached 18% for the Quickstart flow and 26% for the Advanced flow, a substantial increase from the previous rate of 9%–17%. However, as part of a shift in product strategy, Device Sync was deprecated in August 2024, and the creation of new applications was discontinued, leaving no further data available.
